Just out of curiosity:
The oldest known lock was found in Egypt in the ruins of Emperor Sargon II in Khorsabad. It is about 4,000 years old and one of the earliest examples of security engineering. Then again, lock picking was one of the first methods of cracking security systems.
Even kings love locksmithing. For example, Louise XVI was fond of making locks and amused himself in the royal locksmith-workshop assisted by the local locksmith in the castle. They made locks together for over 20 years.
Harry Goudini, real name Erich Weiss (1874-1926), the famous American illusionist-escapists became world-renowned for his amazing escapology even more than for his magical illusions. This is the best example of using Slim Jim – lock pick –technically known as a lockout tool.
There were a few very notable escapes that we could not help mentioning:
The Daily Mirror Newspaper Handcuff Escape – the over an hour escape from a special handcuff that took a locksmith from Birmingham five years to make. The escape was challenged in 1904 by the London Daily Mirror newspaper.
The Milk Can Escape was Harry Houdini’s original invention in which he would be handcuffed and sealed inside an over-sized milk can filled with water. It was firstly introduced in 1908. Houdini made his escape behind a curtain. As part of the effect, he invited people from the audience to hold their breath along with him while he was inside the can.
The Chinese Water Torture Cell Escape – In this escape, Houdini's feet were locked in stocks, and he was lowered upside down into a tank filled with water.
Suspended straitjacket escape – Houdini had himself strapped into a regulation straitjacket and suspended by his ankles from a tall building or crane and then made his escape in full view of the crowd of people.
Overboard Box Escape – It is the escape from a nailed and roped packing crate after it had been lowered into the water while Houdini was locked in handcuffs and leg-irons.
Buried Alive – Once, Houdini was buried in a pit of earth six feet deep without a casket. He became exhausted and panicky trying to dig his way up and called for help. When his hand finally broke the surface, he fell unconscious and had to be pulled from the grave by his assistants. Houdini wrote in his diary that the escape was "very dangerous" and that "the weight of the earth is killing.”
(Taken from Wikipedia)
A zealous locksmith died of late,
And did arrive at heaven gate,
He stood without and would not knock,
Because he meant to pick the lock.
